In many small Indiana communities, fire and medical emergencies are often handled, at least initially, by volunteers. These men and women selflessly serve their communities, but in this story, the community has decided to give back. Brookston, IN firefighter and EMT Harold Lawrence required and received open-heart surgery in January. Unfortunately, complications arose which resulted in the removal of both of his feet. Harold is now in rehab and is expected to make a full recovery – but his medical bills have been piling up. A grateful and determined fire department and community is responding to Harold’s needs with a variety of benefits including a hog roast, motorcycle ride and possibly more.
